Comprehensive music education package for music students

The Gifted & Talented Program Group Studies offer a weekend-only package of semester group lessons, offered to committed music students, in order to provide them with a well-rounded and comprehensive background in music history, literature, music theory, harmony, ear training and solfege. The program also offers a bi-weekly Performance Seminar that provides performance opportunities with feedback, socializing opportunities for students and parents, group coaching on stage presence, musicianship, performance and music learning psychology, and career development strategies.

This course is open to both current EAA students and those who study piano, violin, voice or any other discipline in private teacher studios, or at other schools. This course does not require participants to switch their principal teachers or to take their piano lessons at EAA, and provides supplemental education, mandatory for every serious and ambitious music student.

Key features:

  • Gifted & Talented Program Group Studies are offered on a semester (pro-rated options available for those who join mid-semester) basis only.

  • This package includes two weekly one-hour lessons (Ear Training and Fundamentals of Music Theory, and Music History and Literature) and one bi-weekly Performance Seminar, led by Stanislav Khristenko, Steinway Artist, Chair of The European Academy of Arts Piano Department and the Artistic Director of the EAA Aspiring Artist Program.

  • All lessons shall be available in-person or online;

  • Groups have limited capacity - students are admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis;

  • Each class shall follow a set curriculum plan and homework completion is expected;

  • There are no make-ups for missed group lessons;

The course is offered to students of three age categories on Saturdays:

Ages 5-8

3.00 pm - 3.30 pm - Performance Seminar, bi-weekly on a first and a third Saturday of the month

3.45 pm - 4.15 pm - Ear Training and Fundamentals of Music Theory, weekly

4.15 pm - 4.45 pm - Music History and Literature, weekly

 Ear Training and Fundamentals of Music Theory

Every aspiring musician must acquire solid foundations in solfege, ear training and fundamentals of music theory, such as, but not limited to: knowledge of intervals, basic and compound, chords (triads, sevenths, and their inversions), ability to write music dictations, thorough familiarity with notation, basic music terminology, cadences, figured bass, modulations, transposition, fluency in rhythm, polyrhythms and a demonstrable ability to execute complex rhythm sequences flawlessly.  

Music History and Literature

Every aspiring musician must be familiar with the history of his or her instrument of choice, repertoire for the instrument, development of historic music styles, genres and forms, as well as with the seminal composers and the body of their work, instrumental, choral and orchestral. These classes shall offer in-depth analysis of certain key masterpieces of Western classical music, which well represent either a period of music history or the development of the genre.

Performance Seminar

Twice a month, students shall participate (in-person or online) in the Performance Seminar Class, led by Stanislav Khristenko, EAA Chair of Piano Department, Steinway Artist and winner of over thirty international piano competitions. Students shall be asked to prepare at least one piece from their current repertoire and shall be randomly asked to perform a selection for their peers. During the class, genre, style, historical context and musical analysis of the pieces performed shall be discussed and performance advice shall be offered to the participants.

Students shall be offered an opportunity to perform in front of their peers and get personal feedback, advice or evaluation of their performance. During the Performance Seminar sessions students will participate in a discussion on stage presence, musicianship, performance and music learning psychology, and career development strategies. Parents of the enrolled students are welcome to be present at the Performance Seminars.
